Christian Marriage Advice: Is Divorce an Unforgivable Sin?
by Ben
(USA)
Question: If I divorce my wife and marry someone else, am I committing an unforgivable sin? Would I be actively sinning for the rest of my life? Can I be forgiven of that?"
Answer: Are you committing an unforgivable sin? No. Is divorce and unforgivable sin? No. Would you be sinning for the rest of your life? No. When Jesus died on the cross, His blood covered ALL sin.
But don't use God's grace as a way out of your marriage. Paul put it this way in Romans 9:14 "What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid."
Also, remember marriage is symbolic of Christ's relationship with the church. His love for us is unconditional, and so should ours be for our spouses.
Real love is not a feeling, neither is it something you fall in or out of. Read the page on our website called "What is Love?" to get a better understanding of what real love is all about.
We urge you to do EVERYTHING you can to make your marriage work. But you will only be able to accomplish this through the power of the Holy Spirit. Both of you will need to rededicate your lives to Christ fully and trust that He can breathe life back into your relationship. If He did it for us and I'm confident He can do it for you.
If you are considering divorce, don't give up on your marriage. More importantly, don't limit the power of God. With God ALL things are possible.
