The Truth About Divorce and the Bible

Divorce and the Bible
What Does the Bible Say About Divorce?

Was there divorce in the Bible? Yes, but that was not God's desire or intention.

God's original intent was that marriage would last a life time. In Matthew 19:6 you'll find these words "So then, they are no longer two but one flesh; therefore what God has joined together let no man separate."

Also, in the book of Malachi 2:16 it reads " For the Lord God of Israel says that he hates divorce." So, if God hates divorce, and he intended it to be for a life time, what happened?

Here's what happened: In the Old Testament, Moses initiated laws of divorce under certain circumstances. Not because God had changed his mind, but rather because of the sinful hearts of man. God has not, and does not change his mind; he still hates divorce.

"Jesus answered, "Moses allowed you to divorce your wives because you refused to accept God's teaching, but divorce was not allowed in the beginning." Matthew 19:8 New Century Version

What Circumstances Allow Divorce?
The Truth About Divorce and the Bible

(1.) Adultery: "I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman is guilty of adultery. The only reason for a man to divorce his wife is if she has sexual relations with another man." Matthew 19:9 New Century Version

(2.) Abandonment: "And if a Christian woman has a husband who is not a believer, and he is happy to live with her, she must not divorce him. The husband who is not a believer is made holy through his believing wife. And the wife who is not a believer is made holy through her believing husband. If this were not true; your children would not be clean, but now your children are holy. But if those who are not believers decide to leave, let them leave. When this happens, the Christian man or woman is free. But God called us to live in peace." 1 Corinthians 7:13-15

What If I Divorced For Some Other Reason?
Christian Divorce

Well according to the Word of God, you have sinned.

But listen, God is not a God of rigid laws; He is a God of grace and forgiveness.

So don't panic, the blood of Jesus covers all sin. You will not go to hell if you were divorced for reasons other than those named above.

Repent and ask God to forgive you and He will.

If you are not divorced yet but considering it, do everything you can to prevent divorce. Don't give up on the power of prayer. Don't give up on God too soon.
