How to Get Married 101

But unfortunately, many couples spend more time planning their wedding than they do preparing for a lifetime together.

One minute you're announcing your engagement and the next minute you're...

choosing the wedding colors, the wedding dresses, the invitations, the reception venue, and so on.

It would appear that most couples believe they already have a good understanding of what happens after the ceremony, at least I did. Which is why my first marriage ended in divorce -- I had no idea what I was getting into.

The truth is this, although you think you know exactly what you're getting into, you don't. You see, it is difficult for you to fully comprehend something that you have not experienced first hand.

In the absence of knowledge and experience you'll substitute your expectations, false perceptions, and what others have told you. Your expectations and false perceptions will surely become the source of your marriage problems later.

Lesson #1: When asking how to get married, always start with Christian pre-marriage counseling. This will give you both a realistic look at marriage, and separate fact from fiction.

Would you sign an employment contract without reading the job description, or knowing the history of the company? Probably not.

Then, why get married if you don't fully understand what you're getting into? Marriage is not a temporary contract but a LIFETIME covenant. Therefore it should never be entered into lightly.

Contrary to popular belief, once you're married, the word divorce should be removed from your vocabulary -- it's not an option.

But what if I'm unhappy? Or what if I discover I married the wrong person?

Well, we can guarantee there will be unhappy days. In fact you may even wake up a few mornings, look at your spouse and wonder "what in the world have I done?"

But when that happens, you can't use it as an excuse to bail. This is why we urge you to learn all you can now.

Now is the time to really begin seeking God in prayer for His will concerning your life. Hold on a minute --- you have prayed about this... haven't you?

If you haven't, it's time to push the pause button. Lesson #2: Every decision in your life should be made prayerfully.
