![]() Marrying someone who was previously married
Question: Marrying someone who was previously married. My boyfriend of 2 years has previously been married and is in the process of getting a divorce. He also has 2 children from this marriage. I have never been married and don't have children. We are both committed Christians and want to get married but I am struggling with the fact that he has been married. When I say my wedding vows I will never have said them to anyone before and I feel hurt that this will not be the case for him. Also I know that if we have a family it will be a new experience for me but not for him. I worry we may not be able to share any major life events for the first time as a couple in light of his already having been married and having children. I'm unsure of what to do. I believe that when I make my vows I am giving him a very special gift and I find the fact that he is not able to do the same difficult to deal with. I am grateful for your advice. Answer: The reality is that many people nowadays have been married before, myself included. But Michael didn't feel cheated or bothered at all by it. The fact that you are so bothered by this may be an indication that you should not marry this guy just yet. Not because he's not a great guy, I'm sure he is. But because mentally and emotionally you are just not prepared to deal with being married to someone who has been married before. I mean if you can't get passed the wedding vows, which by the way you can write your own unique vows, how will you be able to deal with his ex-wife and his children being a part of your life forever. Sweetheart, this is a huge commitment that needs much consideration. My personal feeling is that the two of you need to get pre marital counseling before you proceed any further. It sounds as if you may be getting into something that you are not equipped to handle. |
