Problems in Marriage?

Having Problems in Marriage?
Check Your Marriage Expectations...

If you are experiencing tension in your marriage it could be a result of your unreasonable expectations. Whether you choose to admit it or not, we all have unspoken expectations that we bring into marriage.

Where do these expectations come from? They come from a variety of places such as your family, past relationships, media, and even society.

But whatever the source, the challenge must be to rid yourself of unreasonable marriage expectations.

Listen, it simply is not reasonable or Christ-like to expect your spouse to be someone they are not or live up to images in your mind.

Examples of expectations that can cause problems in marriage:

  • My husband should earn enough to allow me to stay at home
  • My wife should always cook and clean
  • My husband should know what I'm feeling
  • My wife should always be in the mood for sex
  • My husband and I should spend all of our free time together
  • My spouse should do things the way I do them

Tips for letting go of your expectations...

  • Pray and ask God to reveal your expectations and help you to release them
  • Admit and discuss your expectations with your spouse
  • Don't hold your spouse to what you expect
  • Remember your spouse is not YOU and can not be YOU
  • Marriage is Not "I" it's "Us"
  • Be committed to your spouse not just "the marriage"

A Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come to you today because I'm having problems in marriage that I realize are a result of the expectations I have placed on my husband (wife).

Lord, I ask that you would forgive me for expecting him (her) to fulfill all of the images I have about marriage. Help me to place my hope and expectations in You alone.

Thank you for my spouse and who you created him (her) to be. I realize now that it is unreasonable to expect him (her) to be like me when you uniquely crafted him (her).

Help me to be the best spouse that I can be for him (her). Help me to be a wife (husband) that brings joy to your heart, in Jesus name, Amen
